Professor Dhinakaran Shanmugam is a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Indore, and currently serves as the Head of the Department. His core areas are Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and heat transfer, and his research interests include flow and heat transfer in porous media, non-Newtonian fluids, bluff body flows, nanofluids, and biofluid mechanics.
He completed his Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur in 2006 in the area of CFD. After that, he worked in a few post-doctoral positions in Europe, including at Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France), Universidade do Minho (Portugal), Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (Portugal) and Universite de Valenciennes (France). He joined IIT Indore in 2012 and has been associated with the institute in different academic roles since then, progressing from Assistant Professor to Professor. Along with teaching and research, he has also taken up administrative responsibilities, including serving as Head of the Department and handling institute-level roles such as JEE Advanced-related responsibilities
Prof. Shanmugam has been actively involved in sponsored research projects supported by reputed funding agencies. Over the years, he has guided and mentored many students, and he strongly believes in combining solid fundamentals with practical, application-oriented work. His broader aim is to improve understanding of fluid flow and thermal processes and to use this knowledge to address real engineering problems through meaningful research and education.
